Paint protection film — PPF — is a transparent polyurethane film applied directly to a car's paintwork. Once fitted it is virtually invisible: no colour change, no texture change, just your paint, shielded. Its entire purpose is defensive, absorbing the damage that daily driving inflicts on bodywork.
The film's party trick is self-healing. The top layer is engineered to flow back together when warmed, so the fine swirls and light scratches that accumulate from washing and road use gradually disappear. It is the closest thing to paintwork that looks after itself.
PPF is the right choice when you already love your car's colour. A full colour-change wrap is for drivers who want a new look; PPF is for drivers who want to keep the look they have, in the condition it deserves, for years longer than paint alone would manage.
Coverage options
You don't have to film the whole car. Most PPF jobs target the areas that take the punishment.
Front-end package
Bonnet leading edge, front bumper, headlights, wings and mirror caps — the panels that meet every stone chip first. The most popular PPF choice.
Full frontal and sills
Everything in the front-end package plus full bonnet, A-pillars, sills and rear bumper top — the complete high-impact zone.
Full body
Every painted panel filmed for maximum protection. The choice for high-value cars, new purchases and cherished long-term keepers.
How self-healing actually works
Quality PPF is built in layers: an adhesive base, a thick impact-absorbing polyurethane core, and a clear elastomeric top coat. It is the top coat that heals. When light scratches disturb it, warmth — sunlight on a summer day, warm wash water, or a careful pass with a heat gun — lets the material relax back to smooth.
There are honest limits. Self-healing handles swirls, wash marring and light scuffs; it does not repair cuts that penetrate the film or impacts hard enough to dent the panel beneath. Think of it as erasing the 95% of everyday wear that slowly dulls paintwork, not as armour against everything.
Film quality decides everything here. Cheap unbranded PPF may barely heal at all and can yellow within a couple of years; we fit recognised quality film with proper UV stability. If you're comparing quotes, ask what film is being fitted — our guide to UK car wrapping and PPF costs explains why material choice moves the price.
How PPF is fitted
Coverage consultation
We assess your driving, your car and your budget, then agree front-end, extended or full-body coverage with a free, no-obligation quote.
Meticulous preparation
PPF shows every speck underneath, so the paint gets a deep wash, decontamination and inspection — flaws are flagged before we start.
Precision-cut application
Patterns are cut to your exact model, then each piece is laid with slip solution, squeegeed out and wrapped around edges.
Curing and final check
Edges are sealed and the film left to cure; we inspect every panel in good light and explain the simple aftercare routine.
PPF and Manchester roads
If any region justifies PPF, it is Greater Manchester. The M60's constant spray, the M62's grit in winter, and year-round wet roads mean paintwork here takes more punishment than in drier parts of the country. Front-end PPF on a car that commutes the motorway network daily pays for itself in preserved paint.
New-car buyers are the most common PPF customers: film fitted in the first weeks of ownership locks in showroom condition from day one. It is equally sensible before selling a cherished car, or on a lease where end-of-term paint charges are a worry. We cover Bury, Middleton and Denton as well as the city centre, with mobile consultations across the conurbation — and we're open 24 hours, so evening appointments are no problem.
Wondering whether film affects the paint it protects? Our guide to whether wrapping damages paint answers it directly, and our matte and satin wraps offer a different route if you'd rather change the look than preserve it.

What is paint protection film?
Paint protection film — PPF — is a transparent, self-healing polyurethane film applied to a car's paintwork. Unlike vinyl wrap it doesn't change the colour; it's virtually invisible once fitted. Its job is purely defensive: absorbing stone chips, scratches, insect marks and road grime that would otherwise reach your paint.
How long does PPF last?
Quality PPF typically lasts seven to ten years, longer than coloured vinyl wrap. It's made from thicker, more durable material designed for long-term protection. The film carries a manufacturer's warranty in most cases, and its lifespan depends mainly on maintenance — regular washing and avoiding harsh chemicals keep it performing.
Is PPF really self-healing?
Yes, within limits. The top coat of quality PPF is elastomeric, meaning light swirl marks and fine scratches disappear with heat — warm sunlight, warm water or a heat gun. It won't heal deep cuts or gouges that go through the film, but the everyday marring that dulls paintwork genuinely does fade away on its own.
What's the difference between PPF and a vinyl wrap?
They solve different problems. Vinyl wrap changes your car's colour and looks; PPF is invisible and exists only to protect. Vinyl is thinner and lasts around five to seven years; PPF is thicker, self-healing and lasts longer. If you love your car's colour, choose PPF. If you want a new colour, choose a full colour-change wrap.
Can PPF be applied over a vinyl wrap?
It can, though it's an unusual combination — most people choose one or the other. PPF over wrap adds invisible protection to a colour-change finish, but it adds significant cost and the wrap's textured finishes can show through. Talk to us about your goals and we'll tell you honestly whether the combination makes sense.
Will PPF turn yellow over time?
Early generations of PPF had yellowing problems, but modern quality films are UV-stable and resist discolouration well. Cheap, unbranded film is where yellowing still happens. We fit recognised quality film, and proper washing — not harsh chemicals or abrasive polishing — keeps it optically clear.
Does PPF actually stop stone chips on the motorway?
That's exactly what it's designed for. The film absorbs the impact of grit and small stones thrown up at motorway speeds — the kind of damage the M60 and M62 dish out daily — instead of your paint. Large, sharp impacts can still cut through, but the vast majority of everyday chips never reach the paintwork.
Can PPF be removed if I change my mind?
Yes. Like vinyl wrap, PPF is removable by a professional using heat and careful peeling, and the paint underneath is preserved — often in better condition than the day the film went on, since it's been shielded for years. Removal is a specialist job, so don't attempt it with blades or solvents yourself.
How do you wash a car with PPF?
Gently and often: hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo, a soft mitt and the two-bucket method, then dry with a plush towel. Avoid abrasive polishes, harsh traffic-film removers and stiff brush car washes. The self-healing top coat actually rewards gentle care — light marks vanish with a little warmth.
Is PPF worth it on a leased car?
It can be, particularly on higher-value cars where end-of-lease charges for paint damage sting. PPF keeps the paintwork in near-showroom condition, which protects you at handover. Check your lease terms first — most allow PPF since it's removable — and our guide to wrapping leased vehicles covers the questions to ask.
